RESEARCH PAPERS PREPARED
Research Papers are grouped in two categories: Shipwreck Related
and Other. Included are several Preliminary Reports and other reports on
shipwrecks (Con Dao Island Shipwreck, Kangxi Indonesia Shipwreck,
Tet Shipwreck, and others) which were never formally excavated and
documented. This is very valuable information, which would otherwise
be lost, but is preserved here.
Other Research Papers include, for example, the following:
Annamese Tiles - Annamese wall tiles were produced specifically and
exclusively for the East Java, Indonesia market centered at Trowulan.
The period of manufacture was confined to the 15th century.
Examples have not been found in Vietnam or anywhere else.
Further details, including examples of tiles, are discussed in this paper:
Siamese Porcelain Gambling Tokens - a summary of the history
of Siamese porcelain gambling tokens (also called pee) is provided
and includes origin, usage, characteristics, and museum holdings.
Thai Base Marks - Survey - discussion of the extensive use of Base
Marks on Thai ceramics with nearly 400 examples described, and
including many photos. The base marks included in the Survey are:
Collection of this writer – 227 Base Marks; Various Other Sources,
including the Southeast Asian Ceramics Museum (SEACM) - Bangkok
University and a prominent Thai collection – 69 Base Marks; and
Published Illustrations of Base Marks on Thai Ceramics - 96 Base Marks.
Yingqing Spotted Wares - underglaze iron-brown spotted wares
are characterized by irregularly shaped iron spots as the primary and
exclusive decorative device. In the Yuan dynasty the use of this
technique was perfected and amplified, and it became one of the
principal decorative techniques on a limited variety of yingqing and
celadon wares. This Paper provides a brief discussion of these wares
with examples included. PAPER PHOTOS
